Can Jade / Jadeite actually change colour over time?

I've always heard this myth by the older generation swear by :

The longer you wear a jade, the 'greener' it gets. Basically 人养玉,玉养人

Since they are essentially a stone crystal, I'm personally leaning towards it being a hoax...? Would love to know more from anyone knowledgeable about this..

From a quick search of jade-related academic articles:

  1. From this study I found that we now use a combination of FTIR, Raman and XRF spectroscopies to identify jade, which are all testing the chemical composition of jade. -- not colormetric

  2. This paper does discuss the alterations of jade color , in which they describe 'alteration' as : to refer to chemical component and structural changes in jade artifacts caused by human activity and natural weathering. >> in which alterations of different hues of green was caused by malachite alteration > caused when in present of large amounts of copper

USB C works for an external monitor when connected through a hub but not directly??

I’m having a strange issue with my portable monitor:

  1. Connecting the monitor directly to my laptop’s USB-C port → it does not work.

  2. Connecting the same monitor using the same USB-C cable through a USB-C hub (from the exact same laptop USB-C port) → it works perfectly.

  3. The hub is not connected to external power.

  4. This exact monitor worked with a previous laptop with the same C-to-C cable.

When I initially couldn't use this port directly, I chalked it up to having a non-display support USB-C port... But now it workks through a hub?!!?

Does anyone know why this happens? Is the hub changing the USB-C negotiation, enabling DisplayPort Alt Mode differently, or is there some compatibility issue between the laptop and monitor?

Would appreciate any insights from people familiar with USB-C/DisplayPort Alt Mode! 🙏

Are lobsters basically sea cockroaches?

Is cockroach meat similar to lobster meat?

Relatedly, some populations refused to eat fish / seafood, although abundant.

Do we see cockroaches like these people basically saw fish (i.e. "ew!")?

Any Advice for the best renter friendly 'tape' that can hold a fair amount of weight?

Hey guys. Wanted to seek some advice on what tape would be good to hang up some string lights -- Nano tape and Blu-tack have previously worked for me on other things, but this round seems to keep dropping every 1-2 weeks.

Was there any time before time started?

I’ve always been curious about the Big Bang theory and the idea that spacetime began at that point.

But then another question arises: what was there before it started? If something starts, that usually means it did not exist before it came into existence. Is there another timeline within which universes begin and end?

If there is no time outside of spacetime, then perhaps the Universe simply is, like a static picture. In that case, time exists only within spacetime and may be, in some sense, an illusion.

And what happens inside the black hole, from our theories it looks like time ends there, but how time can end, what does it even mean?

Maybe our minds simply cannot comprehend a timeless, multidimensional reality. Or maybe there are multiple dimensions of time.

All of our science seems to break down at this point, and perhaps it can never go beyond it. Maybe rationality itself breaks down there, and something else begins.

Camera Specifications on Smartphones having 200MP. Will we even know the difference?

Most of the screens we own are mostly maxed out at 4K, maybe 8K for a TV. A quick search says 4K uses ~8.3MP per frame.

Or can any camera enthusiasts let me know what would they actually consider when buying a camera/smartphone? I've seen friends purposefully buy certain cameras for certain 'filter' effects - how can we know? or is it - just a feeling thing?

Do I need to microwave (cooked) cold/frozen food for it to be safe?

So I was eating a frozen pork bun. Well, it was frozen (fully cooked), and then I steamed it. But just enough until the bun was warm, not piping hot. I always assumed heating food up makes it safer (or indeed is necessary when the food is frozen), but is that actually true?

How do we know only "1 in every 1000 sea turtles survive to adulthood"

Just went on a beach holiday, and was told this stat. Curious how scientists reached this estimate, and how accurate it is.

Sidenote: we helped release hatchlings into the sea, and we did spot some adult ones swimming around!

food

Would 'fat' people traditionally be the more advanced / evolved humans??

Sorry for the crass question.

Was thinking about how some people just have the genes and predisposition to get fatter easily / while eating the same amount of food as others.

If humans were still in the caveman era, I'd somehow imagine these people to have a more ideal 'system' with evolutionary advantage - kind of using less energy / food in day to day activities.
