Summary

1 Study Aim

The main goal of this study was to see if the MIND diet (Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay), which is designed to protect brain health, could slow down the loss of thinking and memory skills in older adults. The researchers wanted to know if this diet worked better than the Mediterranean or DASH diets, which are also known for their health benefits. Simply put: The study wanted to find out if a special diet could help older people keep their brains healthy for longer.

2 Study Design

This research followed 960 older adults from the Memory and Aging Project in Chicago over an average of 4.7 years. Participants completed yearly tests of their memory and thinking skills, as well as detailed food questionnaires. The researchers created a MIND diet score for each person based on how often they ate foods thought to be good or bad for the brain. They then used statistical models to see if higher MIND diet scores were linked to slower declines in thinking and memory, while also considering other factors like age, education, and health conditions. Simply put: The study tracked what older people ate and how their memory changed over several years to see if a certain diet helped their brains.

3 Findings

The study reveals that people who followed the MIND diet most closely had much slower declines in memory and thinking skills compared to those who followed it the least. The difference was similar to being 7.5 years younger in age. This effect was seen across all areas of thinking tested, especially memory and speed of processing. The MIND diet was more effective than the Mediterranean or DASH diets in slowing cognitive decline. The results did not change when accounting for other health or lifestyle factors. However, because this was an observational study, it cannot prove that the diet directly caused the slower decline. The authors recommend that future intervention trials are needed to confirm these findings. Simply put: People who ate more brain-healthy foods lost their memory and thinking skills more slowly, but more research is needed to be sure the diet is the reason.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The Mediterranean and dash diets have been shown to slow cognitive decline; however, neither diet is specific to the nutrition literature on dementia prevention. METHODS: We devised the Mediterranean-Dietary Approach to Systolic Hypertension (DASH) diet intervention for neurodegenerative delay (MIND) diet score that specifically captures dietary components shown to be neuroprotective and related it to change in cognition over an average 4.7 years among 960 participants of the Memory and Aging Project. RESULTS: In adjusted mixed models, the MIND score was positively associated with slower decline in global cognitive score (β = 0.0092; P < .0001) and with each of five cognitive domains. The difference in decline rates for being in the top tertile of MIND diet scores versus the lowest was equivalent to being 7.5 years younger in age. DISCUSSION: The study findings suggest that the MIND diet substantially slows cognitive decline with age. Replication of these findings in a dietary intervention trial would be required to verify its relevance to brain health.
